Wichita, KS – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for central Kansas, effective from noon today until 8 p.m., as extreme grassland fire danger is expected. The warning covers Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, and Chase counties, where conditions are forecast to be highly conducive to fire spread.

South winds are expected to reach speeds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. Relative humidity is forecast to drop as low as 23%, creating conditions where fires can ignite and spread rapidly.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and to take extra precautions as fires could quickly become difficult to control. Officials and local fire crews are on alert and advise the public to stay informed of any potential evacuation notices or restrictions.
