Aberdeen, SD – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect across central and southeastern South Dakota, as strong winds and low humidity combine to create dangerous fire conditions. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect from 1 PM CDT (Noon MDT) to 8 PM CDT (7 PM MDT) today.
According to the National Weather Service, affected areas include Potter, Faulk, Spink, Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, and Buffalo counties in central South Dakota, as well as regions of northeastern Nebraska and parts of Minnesota and Iowa.
Northwest winds are expected to range from 15 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 20 percent, exacerbating the fire risk. Firefighters are urging caution, as any ignited fires will spread rapidly, making them difficult to control.
Residents are advised to refrain from outdoor burning during this period, as the combination of winds and dry conditions can lead to extreme fire behavior. The National Weather Service emphasizes the need for heightened awareness and preparedness in these critical conditions.
