Paradise Hills, NM – Two earthquakes recorded in Bernalillo County on Tuesday marked a rare seismic event for the area. The 2.8 and 2.5 magnitude quakes, occurring at 8:11 a.m. and 9:36 a.m., respectively, are only the third and fourth quakes in the county since 1900.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the last recorded earthquake in Bernalillo County was in 1971, when a 4.7 magnitude quake hit Albuquerque. While earthquakes are not uncommon in New Mexico, these are the first in Bernalillo County in over 50 years.
Residents in Albuquerque and surrounding areas reported feeling the tremors through the USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” system. Both quakes originated west of Paradise Hills and caused no reported damage. Locals are encouraged to report their experiences as the USGS monitors the region’s seismic activity.
The back-to-back events serve as a reminder that while rare, earthquakes remain a potential hazard in the area.
