Portage, IN – A conversation between students about a school shooting in Georgia spiraled into widespread panic in Portage Township Schools this week, after social media users spread false claims of an impending local attack.

According to the Portage Police Department, the incident began when two students discussed “serial killer” threats in Indiana. One of the students’ remarks was taken out of context, and another student spread a message suggesting that a school shooting would happen in Portage. This message quickly went viral, alarming parents and students throughout the district.

Authorities confirmed that the posts were baseless, and no credible threats existed. Despite this, the viral nature of the hoax caused many parents to reconsider sending their children to school.

The Portage Police Department is now seeking charges against the students responsible for spreading the false information. Officials emphasized the dangers of irresponsible social media use, warning that misinformation can create fear and confusion.
