Orland Park, IL – A bat found near Orland Park on August 30 has tested positive for rabies, according to the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory. Local authorities are urging residents to avoid handling bats, skunks, or any other wild animals to prevent exposure.
According to the Orland Park Police Department, anyone who encounters a bat should not touch it and instead contact Orland Park Animal Control at (708) 349-4111. If a bat is found dead or on your property, residents should report it to Cook County Animal and Rabies Control at (708) 974-6140.
Residents are advised to keep pets on a leash and ensure they are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. Immediate veterinary care is recommended if a pet is exposed to a bat or other potentially rabid animals.
