Pueblo, Colo. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt Saturday afternoon across the Pikes Peak Region before sweeping southeast into the Plains by nightfall, bringing a heightened risk of hail and damaging winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, storms will strengthen after 4 p.m. along and east of the I-25 corridor, with the most intense cells capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter. Localized heavy rain could trigger flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and along burn scars.

Cities including Colorado Springs, Pueblo, La Junta, and Lamar lie in the primary risk zone. Drivers on I-25 and Highways 50 and 287 should prepare for sudden downpours and hail-covered roads that could reduce visibility and traction. Emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary evening travel.

Storm chances will taper off overnight, but forecasters caution that additional severe weather is possible into early next week.
