Prince William County, VA – Virginia State Police have officially closed a 52-year-old homicide case, identifying the victim’s husband as the person responsible in the 1973 killing of Shirley L. Washington.
Washington, 33, of Washington, D.C., was found murdered on December 8, 1973, in Conway Robinson State Forest near Gainesville, a wooded area in Prince William County within the Washington metro region.
According to Virginia State Police, investigators determined that Clarence E. Washington, the victim’s husband, was responsible for the killing. He died in 2013 at age 68. Authorities said the case would have been prosecuted if he were still alive.
Officials reviewed decades of evidence, but noted that the passage of time, deterioration of physical evidence, and the deaths of key witnesses prevented prosecution. The Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney confirmed the findings after reviewing the case file.
Investigators said Shirley Washington had previously moved out after Clarence Washington was accused of assaulting a minor and had allegedly threatened her before her death. She suffered multiple stab wounds. According to officials, Clarence Washington denied knowledge of the area where her body was found and refused to cooperate during the original investigation.
Authorities also stated he allegedly made concerning statements prior to the killing, suggesting intent to harm the victim.
The case received renewed attention through support from state forensic and analytical teams, including resources tied to sexual assault evidence initiatives.
Law enforcement officials said the resolution brings long-awaited answers, even without prosecution, and highlights ongoing efforts to solve cold cases across Virginia.
