Chicago, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging Illinoisans to prioritize safety this Thanksgiving by preventing foodborne and respiratory illnesses. Officials recommend proper ventilation, frequent hand washing, and safe food preparation to protect holiday guests.
According to the IDPH, food safety begins with properly thawing turkeys in the refrigerator for about 24 hours per 5 pounds. Guests should use a food thermometer to ensure the turkey’s internal temperature reaches 165°F. Leftovers must be refrigerated within two hours to avoid contamination.
Health experts also advise against cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards for raw meats and other foods. Washing hands thoroughly for 20 seconds before and after handling food remains essential.
To combat respiratory illnesses, IDPH recommends improving ventilation and encouraging sick individuals to stay home. The agency notes low respiratory virus levels but urges caution, especially for vulnerable groups.
