Pontiac, IL – Thick haze and elevated pollution levels from Canadian wildfires are impacting air quality across central Illinois Thursday night, prompting health concerns for cities including Ottawa, Pontiac, and Kankakee.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, wildfire smoke has raised particulate matter levels into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range across La Salle, Livingston, and Kankakee counties. The conditions are expected to persist through at least early Friday.
Local residents may experience irritation of the eyes, throat, or lungs, especially those with asthma or chronic respiratory issues. Health officials recommend avoiding prolonged outdoor exertion, especially for older adults, children, and those with heart or lung issues. Local health departments advise staying indoors with filtered air, postponing outdoor work, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.
In Pontiac, residents reported a visible haze by late afternoon, while air quality monitors in Kankakee showed pollution levels nearly double the recommended limit for vulnerable groups.
Officials urge residents to remain indoors when possible and reduce use of ventilation systems that bring in outdoor air. Additional updates will be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
