Auburn Hills, MI – A Michigan-based manufacturer has issued a recall for about 50,000 combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors due to a potential failure to alert users to life-threatening hazards.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recalled devices—model number 51000-600—were manufactured by Apollo America Inc., based in Auburn Hills, and sold exclusively by Vivint between June 2024 and October 2024. The malfunction may prevent the detectors from warning consumers of a fire or carbon monoxide (CO) leak, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation or death.
The affected detectors are white and labeled with “Replace by” followed by a date between June 2034 and October 2034. The model number and the name “Apollo” can be found on the back of the device.
Vivint is offering a free replacement detector and has contacted all known buyers. Customers should continue using the recalled unit until the replacement is installed. No injuries or incidents have been reported so far.
Consumers are urged to follow the instructions in the Replacement Guide and dispose of lithium batteries at household hazardous waste collection centers. Improper disposal can present a fire risk.
The units were sold through Vivint’s website, door-to-door sales, and telephone orders for between $50 and $100. Consumers with questions may contact Vivint at 800-281-9667 or visit Vivint Recall Page for more information.
The recall was announced Wednesday.
