Quincy, CA – A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after California Highway Patrol officers stopped a damaged pickup truck that was dragging its tailgate and throwing sparks along State Route 89, authorities said.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s Quincy Area office, the incident occurred at approximately 1:38 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, when officers observed a vehicle traveling southbound on State Route 89 near Gold Lake Highway at a high rate of speed.
As officers caught up to the pickup, they saw its tailgate hanging from the rear of the vehicle and dragging across the roadway, creating sparks. CHP officers conducted a traffic stop and began investigating.
According to CHP, officers determined the driver had allegedly been involved in a crash shortly before they observed the vehicle. During the stop, investigators said the driver showed signs of alcohol impairment and was evaluated for driving under the influence.
Authorities allege the driver’s blood alcohol concentration measured more than twice California’s legal limit, leading to the driver’s arrest on suspicion of DUI. The driver’s identity was not immediately released.
The California Highway Patrol said the incident serves as a reminder that impaired driving can have serious consequences and urged motorists to plan ahead before consuming alcohol by designating a sober driver or using alternative transportation.
The investigation remains ongoing. The DUI allegation has not been proven in court, and the driver is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
