Lexington, NC – The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam targeting people through text messages from individuals falsely claiming to be members of the U.S. military.

According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies have received reports that scammers are contacting victims by text message, claiming they are active-duty military personnel who need assistance cashing a check.

Authorities said the scam typically involves the suspect mailing a check to the victim and instructing them to deposit or cash it. The victim is then told to transfer part or all of the funds to another account before the fraudulent check is discovered, potentially leaving the victim responsible for the lost money.

The sheriff’s office is reminding residents to never deposit or cash a check for someone they do not personally know and trust. Officials also advise people to be skeptical of anyone asking them to move money on their behalf, especially someone they have only communicated with online or by text.

If you receive a message matching this scam, authorities say you should not send money, deposit the check or provide any personal or banking information.

Instead, residents are encouraged to report the incident to their local law enforcement agency and delete the message.

Law enforcement agencies across the country continue to warn that scammers frequently impersonate military members, government officials and other trusted individuals to gain victims’ confidence. Officials say taking a moment to verify unexpected requests involving money can help prevent financial losses.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents to share the warning with family members and friends to help prevent others from becoming victims.
