Plainfield Gymnast Killed in UW-Whitewater Shooting Suspect Held on $1M Bond

Whitewater, WI – A 21-year-old Plainfield, Illinois, woman was shot and killed late Friday night near the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus. Kara Welsh, a gymnast and student, was found with multiple gunshot wounds at an apartment on Main Street, according to police.

On Tuesday, police identified Chad Richards, 23, of Loves Park, Illinois, as the suspect. Richards, a fellow UW-Whitewater student, appeared in court via video and is being held in the Walworth County Jail on a $1 million cash bond. Authorities say Richards and Welsh were acquainted and had an altercation before the fatal shooting.
