Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Snow could begin coating sections of I-376 and I-79 by sunrise Sunday, creating slick bridges and slower travel during the early morning drive.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a fast-moving disturbance will pass through western Pennsylvania Saturday night into Sunday. The system brings a 30 to 40 percent chance of at least 1 inch of snowfall within a 24-hour period across Allegheny, Butler and Beaver counties. A brief period of freezing drizzle may also develop Sunday morning, increasing the risk of thin ice on untreated surfaces.
Light snow may reach Pittsburgh after midnight Saturday, spreading north toward Butler and east toward Latrobe before daybreak Sunday. Even minor accumulation can quickly freeze on elevated roadways, including the Parkway East, I-279 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. PennDOT crews are expected to monitor conditions, but drivers should anticipate reduced speeds and extra stopping distance through mid-morning Sunday.
Communities along I-70 near Washington and along Route 28 north of the city could also see light coatings, especially on overpasses. While snowfall totals appear modest, the timing overnight into early Sunday raises the risk for slick conditions before crews can fully treat roadways.
Motorists should allow extra travel time, keep headlights on during snow, and avoid sudden braking on bridges. Keep a winter kit in vehicles, including blankets and a phone charger, in case of delays.
Conditions should improve later Sunday as precipitation tapers, but colder air will keep surfaces vulnerable to refreezing into Sunday night. Additional updates are possible if snowfall probabilities increase.
