Phoenix, Arizona – Strong winds are already creating hazardous travel conditions across the Phoenix metro this morning, with blowing dust and reduced visibility expected to intensify through early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. MST Sunday, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph in higher terrain east of the city and 20 to 35 mph across valley locations. The strongest impacts are expected along major corridors including Interstate 10, Loop 202, and State Route 60.
Communities in Mesa, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, and areas toward Globe are most likely to see the highest gusts and localized dust, while parts of central and western Phoenix may experience hazy skies from lofted dust drifting west. Visibility could drop below 1 mile in the worst pockets, especially in open desert areas.
High-profile vehicles, including trucks and RVs, may encounter dangerous crosswinds, particularly on east-west routes. Loose outdoor items can become airborne, adding to roadway hazards.
Drivers should slow down, keep headlights on in dusty conditions, and be prepared for sudden visibility drops. Residents are urged to secure patio furniture and avoid outdoor burning.
