Grand Forks, North Dakota – A sharp temperature swing is underway across eastern North Dakota, with cold morning conditions giving way to a rapid warm-up that could impact travel and snowmelt over the next 72 hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, Sunday started with lows between 20 and 30 degrees and highs only reaching 35 to 45 degrees. That changes quickly, with temperatures climbing into the 55 to 70 degree range by Monday and Tuesday, before peaking between 70 and 85 degrees by Wednesday.

Cities including Grand Forks, Fargo, Devils Lake, and Grafton will see this dramatic shift, with overnight lows also rising from the 20s into the 50s by midweek. The rapid warming may accelerate melting of any remaining snowpack and could create wet or slushy conditions on rural roads, especially during early morning hours.

While no major storms are expected early in the week, the changing conditions could stress drainage systems and lead to standing water in low-lying areas. Drivers should watch for water-covered roads and soft shoulders, particularly along highways like U.S. 2 and Interstate 29.

Residents should prepare for fluctuating conditions by dressing in layers and checking drainage around homes. The warming trend continues through Wednesday, with more unsettled weather and cooler temperatures possible heading into next weekend.
