PHOENIX, Ariz. – Phoenix residents face unhealthy air conditions Wednesday as a High Pollution Advisory remains in effect due to elevated ozone levels. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality warns that the city’s air quality index has reached 104, pushing it into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category.

According to ADEQ, stagnant conditions are allowing ozone to build throughout the afternoon, with the highest concentrations expected between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Children, seniors, and those with asthma or other lung conditions are urged to limit time outdoors. The agency recommends avoiding strenuous outdoor activity and postponing afternoon workouts until after sunset.

The advisory also applies to drivers. Officials encourage carpooling, delaying errands, and refueling vehicles in the evening to help reduce emissions. Ozone pollution can trigger coughing, chest tightness, and breathing difficulties, especially in those with pre-existing health issues.

Relief is expected Thursday as stronger ventilation moves into the Valley, bringing ozone levels back down to the moderate range. However, ADEQ warns conditions may worsen again by Sunday if winds weaken.
