Lake County, IN – First-time turkey roasters can breathe easy this Thanksgiving with expert tips from the Lake County Health Department.
The department has shared a detailed guide to help residents safely prepare a holiday turkey. Officials recommend setting the oven temperature no lower than 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Turkeys should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees, measured in three locations: the innermost thigh, the thickest breast area, and stuffing if applicable.
Cooking times vary depending on the turkey’s weight and whether it is stuffed. For example, an unstuffed 8- to 12-pound turkey needs 2 ¾ to 3 hours, while a stuffed bird of the same size requires 3 to 3 ½ hours. Larger turkeys, such as a stuffed 20- to 24-pound bird, may take up to 5 ½ hours.
The health department encourages using a food thermometer for accuracy and safety. To access the complete turkey preparation guide, visit FSIS.gov.
Don’t wing it this holiday. Following these steps ensures your Thanksgiving turkey will impress guests while keeping food safety in mind.
