Peoria, IL – A Peoria man is facing multiple charges after police say he allegedly fled a traffic stop, crashed his vehicle, attempted to escape on foot, and discarded a handgun before being taken into custody.
According to the Peoria Police Department, officers attempted a traffic stop at approximately 2:14 a.m. Saturday, July 11, in the 900 block of State Street. Police said the driver initially appeared to stop but then allegedly fled the scene. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.
A short time later, the vehicle reportedly crashed near the intersection of Washington Street and Eaton Street. Officers said they observed the driver exit the vehicle and run before taking him into custody following a brief foot pursuit.
Police identified the suspect as 35-year-old Jordan D. Gomes. During the investigation, a Peoria Police K-9 searched the suspect’s reported flight path and allegedly recovered a discarded handgun.
According to police, Gomes was arrested on allegations of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card, unlawful possession of firearm ammunition without a FOID card, resisting police, obstructing identification, reckless driving, along with several additional traffic-related violations. He was transported to the Peoria County Jail.
