Greenwich Township, PA – A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 78 near Greenwich Township Friday evening. The Berks County Coroner’s Office confirmed the fatality, which occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 40.
Pennsylvania State Police responded to the scene and have launched an investigation. Authorities have not yet determined the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
The accident prompted the closure of one westbound lane on the busy interstate, leading to significant traffic delays for several hours Friday night. Drivers faced extensive backups as crews worked to clear the scene and begin their investigation.
According to officials, the pedestrian’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members. The Berks County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the cause of death.
