Lancaster, Pa. – Heavy downpours could overwhelm creeks and low-lying roads across south central Pennsylvania starting Friday evening, as a Flood Watch goes into effect for Lancaster, York, and Adams counties.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, the watch begins at 7 p.m. and lasts through 5 a.m. Saturday. Rainfall rates may hit 1 to 2 inches per hour, with localized totals reaching up to 3 inches overnight.
Residents in flood-prone neighborhoods, especially near the Susquehanna River and its tributaries, should prepare for rapid water rises. Urban areas like York and Lancaster could see flooded intersections and underpasses due to poor drainage.
Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads, particularly after dark, and to move vehicles from low-lying parking areas. Power outages and basement flooding are also possible.
This is the first significant rain event in weeks for the region, increasing the risk of quick runoff. Emergency officials recommend charging devices and monitoring alerts in case flash flood warnings are issued.
Flooding threats may persist into early Saturday. Additional alerts or warnings could be issued later tonight.
