Trenton, N.J. – Heavy rain is expected to drench much of New Jersey late Friday, with up to 3 inches possible by early Saturday, prompting a Flood Watch that could affect roads, homes, and streams across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, the watch covers a wide swath of central and northern New Jersey, including Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Warren, and Hunterdon counties. The alert begins at 7 p.m. Friday and remains in effect through 8 a.m. Saturday, with the heaviest rain likely to fall overnight. Rainfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour, increasing the risk of rapid flooding.
Residents in Camden, Trenton, Morristown, and surrounding areas should prepare for potential street flooding and rising creeks. Low-lying areas and poor-drainage roadways—particularly along Route 1, I-78, and the Raritan River basin—may see flooding develop quickly. Emergency officials advise securing basements, charging devices, and avoiding overnight travel unless necessary.
This marks the first significant rainfall event for many areas since early May, raising concerns about urban flooding and stream overflows.
Warnings could be upgraded as the system moves in. Stay tuned for local alerts and be ready to act if flood warnings are issued overnight.
