Kankakee, IL – An urgent drinking water advisory has been issued for families with infants in several Illinois communities after elevated nitrate levels were detected in water systems served by the Kankakee Water Treatment Plant.
According to Aqua Illinois, recent heavy rains combined with spring agricultural runoff led to unprecedented nitrate concentrations in the Kankakee River. The alert affects customers in Kankakee, Peotone, and University Park, as well as several surrounding towns.
Officials warn that the water may be harmful to infants under six months of age and advise against using it for drinking or formula preparation. Bottled water should be used instead, and boiling the water is discouraged as it can further concentrate nitrate levels.
The affected municipalities include the City of Kankakee, Village of Bourbonnais, Village of Bradley, Aroma Park, Manteno, Peotone, and University Park, among others. Pregnant women and individuals with specific health concerns are also advised to consult a physician before using the water.
Symptoms of nitrate exposure in infants include shortness of breath and bluish skin tone, and parents are urged to seek medical attention if these signs appear.
Aqua Illinois is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates. Bottled water distribution began Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. at the following locations:
- 1000 S. Schuyler Ave., Kankakee, IL 60901
- 1737 E. Amberstone Rd., Manteno, IL 60950
- 24650 S. Western Ave., University Park, IL 60484
The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
