Orland Park, Illinois – The Orland Park Police Department reports a 154% increase in traffic stops after transitioning to 12-hour patrol shifts, a change officials say is enhancing public safety.

According to a department release issued Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the new 12-hour patrol schedule officially took effect Feb. 1. The department said the shift was designed to increase officer availability, improve operational efficiency and expand proactive enforcement efforts across the village.

Police reported that from Feb. 1 through Feb. 28, officers made 28 aggravated speeding arrests. Since the transition, average daily staffing has increased to 15 patrol officers and supervisors per shift, not including a dedicated Traffic Unit, Targeted Response Unit or part-time officers assigned to retail and business districts.

Department officials said the revised schedule has led to increased traffic enforcement throughout the village, greater visibility in neighborhoods and along main roadways, and expanded patrol presence in business areas.

The shift model was brought before the Village Board by department members seeking organizational changes. Officials also stated the new schedule supports officer wellness by allowing consecutive days off and promoting work-life balance.

The department said it remains committed to proactive policing and ensuring safety for residents, businesses and visitors.
