Lakeview, Oregon – Drivers in south-central Oregon may face sudden whiteout-like conditions through 2 a.m. Tuesday as blowing dust reduces visibility to a quarter mile along parts of Highway 31.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, a Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect for portions of Lake County south of Summer Lake, including the Chewaucan Valley, Paisley, and surrounding desert terrain. Gusty winds are lofting dust from dry surfaces, making travel especially dangerous after sunset.
The advisory covers Northern and Eastern Klamath County as well as Central and Eastern Lake County. Hazardous conditions are most likely along exposed stretches of Highway 31 and other rural roadways. Visibility may drop rapidly, creating unpredictable and potentially life-threatening driving situations.
People with respiratory concerns are urged to stay indoors tonight. If caught in a dust storm, officials advise pulling completely off the road, turning off lights, and avoiding the brake pedal to prevent rear-end collisions.
This is the first blowing dust event of the month and could be a preview of more wind-driven hazards as dry summer conditions intensify. More wind advisories may follow if patterns persist.
