Pendleton, Oregon – Farmers and gardeners across eastern Oregon and southeast Washington should prepare for a sharp cold snap late Monday night, with temperatures potentially dropping to 30°F by sunrise Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Freeze Watch is in effect from 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday for the Lower Columbia Basin of both Oregon and Washington, the Kittitas and Yakima valleys, and the foothills of the Northern and Blue Mountains. Areas like Pendleton, Hermiston, Yakima, and Walla Walla are expected to see the coldest conditions in wind-sheltered valleys.
Frost and freeze conditions could harm unprotected crops, flowers, and outdoor plumbing. Sensitive vegetation in places like Athena, Connell, and Prosser may be especially vulnerable during the early morning hours.
Officials urge residents to cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and insulate exposed pipes to prevent damage. This is the first widespread freeze since early spring began warming the region.
The freeze watch remains in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday, with updates possible if colder temperatures become more widespread.
