A strong coastal storm system is set to impact Oregon, Washington, and Northern California through the weekend, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and significant snowfall at higher elevations. Authorities across the region are advising residents and travelers to prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions, particularly along major routes like Interstate 5.
According to the National Weather Service, areas in Oregon and Washington will see consistent rain through Friday, with a 90% chance of precipitation in cities such as Eugene. Rainfall may total between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, with even higher amounts expected in thunderstorms. In Northern California, rain is forecasted to increase Friday night, continuing into the weekend with snow levels dropping to around 2,500 feet in the mountains.
Mountainous regions throughout the Pacific Northwest are expected to experience significant snowfall, with snow levels gradually rising to 4,500 feet by Saturday afternoon in Oregon’s Cascade Range. This could lead to dangerous travel conditions on mountain passes, as icy and snowy roads are likely to impact visibility and traction. For those traveling north, Washington’s higher elevations may also experience snowfall, especially on Saturday night, as temperatures drop.
Residents in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California should remain alert for weather updates and avoid non-essential travel in affected areas over the weekend. Wind gusts of up to 18 mph could further complicate road conditions, especially in open areas and valleys prone to high winds. By Sunday, rain is likely to persist across much of the region, with highs ranging from the 40s to low 50s.
This weekend’s storm could disrupt travel, outdoor events, and other weekend activities. Be sure to check local weather advisories, and take precautions to stay safe in wet or snowy conditions.
