Burns, OR – Residents of Harney County remain on high alert as the Silvies River near Burns continues to flood, with river levels expected to stay elevated through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, the river measured 12.3 feet at 9 a.m. Wednesday—well above the 12.0-foot flood stage. Flooding impacts have been reported across roads and residential areas, with the potential for more challenges as warmer temperatures this weekend could trigger additional snowmelt and renewed rises in river levels next week.
Authorities warn that, although the river is projected to drop below flood stage on Thursday, conditions remain hazardous. A flood warning remains in effect until further notice. The current crest, which reached 12.7 feet within the past 24 hours, is among the highest observed in recent years—surpassing even the notable flood of March 1986.
Residents are urged to stay clear of flooded areas and heed road closures. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains a critical reminder as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Motorists are advised not to bypass barricades or attempt to cross flooded roads.
The National Weather Service will release its next update Thursday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. PDT. In the meantime, local officials continue monitoring water levels and assessing flood impacts across the region.
