Talco, TX — Minor flooding is expected this week along several river systems in eastern Texas, prompting a series of Flood Warnings from the National Weather Service in Shreveport.
Rising waters are forecast for White Oak Creek, the Sulphur River, and Attoyac Bayou, with conditions anticipated to affect low-lying and rural areas beginning as early as Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, White Oak Creek near Talco is expected to exceed its 16.0-foot flood stage by Sunday afternoon, with a crest of 17.0 feet projected for Tuesday morning. Lowland flooding of creek bottoms is likely, and ranchers with livestock or equipment near the creek are advised to relocate them to higher ground.
The Sulphur River near Talco is also forecast to rise above its 20.0-foot flood stage by Saturday afternoon, reaching up to 25.0 feet early Monday morning. This may result in minor flooding of nearby lowlands and the closure of some secondary roads. Residents are warned not to drive through flooded areas.
In Nacogdoches County, the Attoyac Bayou near Chireno is currently experiencing minor flooding, with water levels recorded at 19.1 feet as of Wednesday morning. The river is expected to gradually recede through the weekend, but renewed rises are possible due to additional rainfall forecasted later in the week.
Officials urge all residents in affected areas to use caution near riverbanks, avoid flooded roadways, and heed all posted barricades and warning signs. The next update is scheduled for Thursday.
