Toronto, ON – A traveler from Germany was arrested at Toronto Pearson International Airport after Canadian border officers uncovered a massive drug shipment concealed inside their luggage.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the individual arrived earlier this week and was stopped by officers in the Greater Toronto Area. During inspection, agents discovered 62 kilograms of ketamine hidden in two suitcases. The haul is valued at an estimated $4.34 million CAD.
In addition to the drugs, authorities seized over $10,000 CAD in various currencies, believed to be the suspected proceeds of crime. The suitcases were flagged during x-ray screening, which revealed inconsistencies in their contents. Upon physical examination, large vacuum-sealed bags containing the white powder were recovered.
The traveler, whose identity has not yet been released, was immediately detained. The case has since been handed over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for continued investigation.
Ketamine is a controlled substance in Canada, typically used in medical settings but increasingly found in illicit drug markets for its dissociative and hallucinogenic effects. Law enforcement agencies say such seizures are critical in efforts to curb the illegal drug trade entering the country.
Officials have not confirmed any pending charges, but noted that investigations are ongoing and may lead to further developments. The CBSA emphasized its continued vigilance at border entry points to prevent narcotics from reaching Canadian communities.
