Northwestern Oklahoma faces heightened fire risk Thursday as the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning through 9 p.m. for multiple counties across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, the warning covers Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Roger Mills, and Dewey counties. Forecasters cite hot temperatures nearing 98 degrees, relative humidity as low as 6 percent, and southwest winds gusting up to 45 mph as the primary threats.

The fire environment rating reached an 8 out of 10 Thursday afternoon, signaling extreme conditions for rapid fire spread. Fuel moisture levels are critically low, ranked in the 70th to 89th percentile range, compounding the hazard across the region.

Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning and urge residents to remain alert. Even small flames could escalate quickly in the current conditions.

Fire crews remain on standby across the Panhandle and northwest counties. Residents are encouraged to secure flammable materials and avoid activities that might produce sparks or flames.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday evening. Officials will continue monitoring conditions and issue updates as necessary through local emergency management and the National Weather Service.
