Rapid City, SD – Snowfall continues to blanket the Black Hills region of South Dakota and Wyoming as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 9 a.m. MDT Friday, potentially complicating travel for residents and commuters across the area.
According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, additional snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches are expected in the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota and the Wyoming Black Hills. Cities impacted include Deadwood, Lead, Sundance, Cheyenne Crossing, and surrounding mountain communities.
Motorists should anticipate slippery road conditions, particularly during Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Reduced visibility and snow-covered roads could make travel hazardous, especially along higher elevations and secondary routes.
In Campbell County, including Gillette and Wright, a separate advisory remains in effect until midnight Thursday. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph, potentially causing blowing snow and added driving difficulty.
Officials urge residents to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions by dialing 511 before heading out. Snowfall in this region during mid-April is not uncommon, though this system may disrupt typical spring transitions.
