Columbus, OH – Ohio residents are in for an astronomical treat this weekend as the 2024 Perseids meteor shower peaks. On the night of August 11 through the early morning of August 12, skywatchers could see up to 100 meteors per hour, with the possibility of witnessing one meteor per minute under optimal conditions. The Perseids, which stem from the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, have been visible since mid-July, but the peak nights promise the most impressive display.

Although the 53% waxing moon might interfere with visibility, the best viewing times will be after the moon sets, providing the darkest skies. For the best experience, consider visiting dark-sky areas like the Hocking Hills, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, or even the Amish Country farmlands.

Pack some warm clothes, a blanket, and perhaps a thermos of coffee or hot cocoa to enjoy the show. It’s a great opportunity to gather friends and family for a night under the stars. With clear skies, you might see one meteor every minute, making this event one you won’t want to miss!
