Cleveland, OH – Dangerous heat will intensify across northern Ohio on Wednesday as temperatures surge into the 90s and humidity pushes heat index values into the triple digits across much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Wednesday will bring the greatest coverage of elevated temperatures and heat index values this week. Afternoon highs are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s, while heat index values in the upper 90s to low 100s will create Major Heat Risk conditions across much of northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania.

The hottest conditions are expected during the afternoon and early evening in communities including Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Toledo, Findlay, Mansfield, Marion, Sandusky, Youngstown, Wooster, Medina, Ravenna, and Warren. Inland locations could see heat index values as high as 106 degrees, while temperatures along the immediate Lake Erie shoreline, including Mentor and Erie, Pennsylvania, will be somewhat cooler due to onshore winds.

Officials warn that prolonged exposure to the heat can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces or the shade. Never leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
