Columbus, Ohio – Severe storms and summer heat are converging in central Ohio this week, with Columbus facing thunderstorm threats and 89°F temperatures by Wednesday afternoon. Gusty winds and possible lightning will make travel along I-70 and I-71 riskier, especially during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, isolated thunderstorms may develop as early as 2 p.m. Wednesday, with higher chances (40%) after nightfall. Winds could gust up to 24 mph, and any storms may bring heavy rainfall, especially in low-lying areas and near major roadways. Motorists should remain alert for sudden downpours and brief flooding.

By Thursday, widespread showers and storms are likely, with storms continuing into the night. Columbus and surrounding areas, including Westerville and Grove City, may see up to half an inch of rain, possibly more during isolated downpours. The risk of thunderstorm development is 80% on both Thursday and Friday.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices ahead of possible power disruptions, and avoid flooded roads. Those with outdoor plans Wednesday or Thursday should prepare for rapid weather changes.

More rain continues into Friday, with storms likely through early evening. Conditions begin to improve by Saturday, but spotty showers remain possible.
