Pittsburgh, PA – Drivers and utility crews across western Pennsylvania could face rapidly deteriorating conditions by midafternoon Saturday as a line of severe thunderstorms pushes in with wind gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather is in place through early evening, with the highest threat centered on damaging wind gusts that could exceed 60 to 75 mph. Large hail approaching 2 inches in diameter and isolated tornadoes remain possible as a strong cold front sweeps east.

The risk zone stretches beyond Allegheny County into eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia, including cities like Wheeling, Morgantown, and New Philadelphia. In Pittsburgh, storms are most likely between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with the I-376 and I-79 corridors particularly vulnerable to sudden downpours and reduced visibility below 1 mile.

Power outages could impact thousands if the strongest cells develop, especially in wooded and hilly terrain common across the region. Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and enable wireless emergency alerts ahead of the storm window.

This system will move out by late evening, but additional advisories or warnings may be issued with little lead time as storms intensify.
