Pittsburgh, PA – More than 10 million residents across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 7 p.m. Thursday as intense storms push through the region, threatening large hail and damaging wind gusts.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the storms are expected to intensify this afternoon and evening, with isolated hail up to ping pong ball size and wind gusts reaching 65 mph possible. The watch currently includes major cities such as Columbus, Cleveland, Akron, and Pittsburgh, and may expand as additional storm cells develop.

Frequent lightning and torrential rain could also impact travel along Interstates 70, 71, 76, and 77. Localized power outages, downed trees, and minor structural damage are possible, especially in areas with saturated ground from recent rain. School districts and hospitals across the region are on alert, with nearly 3,600 schools and over 220 hospitals in the watch zone.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor local alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel during active storms. If you’re caught outside, seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building and avoid using electrical appliances.

The watch remains in effect through 7 p.m., but further warnings are likely as the storm line moves eastward. Stay tuned to local weather updates.
