Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a severe weather alert for the northwest Texas Panhandle this evening. Residents in and around Amarillo should be prepared for potentially dangerous weather conditions, including large hail and damaging winds. The storms are most likely to occur between 6 PM and midnight, although some storm activity may persist into the early morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service, the storms could bring hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter—about the size of a ping pong ball—and wind gusts reaching up to 70 MPH. There is also a very low, but present, potential for tornadoes, making it crucial for residents to stay alert and monitor weather updates throughout the evening.
The area most at risk includes Amarillo and surrounding communities such as Stratford and Dalhart, where the earliest storms could begin as soon as 5 PM. While the severe weather threat is expected to diminish after midnight, residents are still advised to be cautious as thunderstorms may linger.
The rest of the week in Amarillo is expected to see hot and sunny conditions, with temperatures hovering in the mid-to-high 90s, offering little relief from the stormy start to the week.
