Cleveland, OH – Northern Ohio is bracing for significant snowfall as lake effect snowstorms are forecast to bring accumulations of up to 12 inches by Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Cuyahoga and Lake counties, beginning at 1 a.m. Wednesday through 7 p.m. Thursday.
According to the NWS, widespread rain will transition to snow early Wednesday morning, creating treacherous road conditions, particularly along I-90. Winds gusting up to 35 mph may cause blowing snow, reducing visibility to dangerous levels. Travelers are urged to delay nonessential trips and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles.
The heaviest snow is expected in Lake County and the higher terrain of eastern Cuyahoga County, with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches. Lesser amounts are predicted in other areas. Snowfall is expected to ease Thursday but may resume Friday as additional lake effect systems move through the region.
Highs will hover around 30°F for the remainder of the week, with breezy conditions persisting. Drivers should plan for slow travel and allow extra time on major routes, including I-77 and I-271.
Looking ahead, scattered snow showers remain possible over the weekend, with another 2 to 4 inches forecast for Saturday. Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and check road conditions at ohgo.com before traveling.
Stay safe, and prepare for ongoing winter weather challenges as the new year begins.
