Denver, CO – Colorado residents are being urged to stay cautious as black ice poses significant risks on roadways this New Year’s Day. With temperatures hovering near freezing and recent light snow accumulation, slick spots have formed, particularly on high-traffic routes such as I-25 and I-70.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Boulder, these conditions will persist today, with mostly sunny skies failing to melt icy patches in shaded areas. Officials are advising drivers to slow down and remain vigilant for black ice, particularly during early morning and evening hours.

Looking ahead, moderate snow is expected to develop late Friday into Saturday across the region, with accumulation likely in mountain passes and lower elevations. The NWS warns that travel conditions could become hazardous through the weekend as snowfall combines with subfreezing temperatures, exacerbating black ice formation.

Five-Day Forecast

Thursday: Sunny with a high of 43°F. South winds at 6 to 8 mph.

Friday: Partly sunny, high near 52°F.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy with a low of 25°F. Snow showers possible late.

Saturday: High of 43°F with a chance of snow showers by the afternoon.

Sunday: High near 37°F. Light snow possible throughout the day.

Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions at cotrip.org and prepare for slower travel times. Carry emergency supplies, including blankets and water, especially when traveling through mountain areas.
