Jackson, Miss. – Severe storms are expected to move into northern Mississippi late Friday, with the National Weather Service issuing a “slight risk” alert for damaging wind gusts and large hail in several counties.
According to the NWS office in Jackson, storms are expected to intensify between 9 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, especially across the northern Delta region. Areas including Greenwood, Eupora, Columbus, and Greenville face the greatest threat, with potential wind gusts reaching 60 mph and hail up to golf ball size. A tornado cannot be ruled out.
Counties under a marginal risk—including Yazoo City, Bastrop, and parts of the central region—may still see isolated severe storms with smaller hail and brief wind bursts. The threat zone largely follows the I-55 corridor, with key impacts likely along U.S. Highway 82 and surrounding rural areas.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during peak storm hours, and keep weather alerts active overnight. Charge devices now, and have flashlights ready in case of power outages.
Additional updates are expected Friday morning, and warnings may be expanded based on evolving storm tracks.
