Duluth, Minnesota – Comfortable summer weather won’t last much longer across northern Minnesota as temperatures begin climbing through the end of the week, with several rounds of thunderstorms expected before highs push into the 90s this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, today will remain quiet with partly cloudy skies and afternoon highs ranging from 72 to 78 degrees. The warming trend begins Thursday as highs climb into the 80 to 86 degree range, accompanied by a 30% chance of thunderstorms, mainly near the International Border.

Thunderstorm chances become more widespread Friday as highs rise into the lower to upper 80s. Storms are expected to develop during the afternoon before continuing overnight. The National Weather Service says a few storms could become strong Friday night, especially across north-central Minnesota.

By Saturday, temperatures will reach 85 to 93 degrees, with the warmest readings expected south of Highway 2, including communities such as Brainerd, Aitkin and Hinckley. Morning thunderstorms may linger before gradually moving out of the area. Sunday will remain warm, with highs between 80 and 89 degrees under partly cloudy skies and only a slight chance for additional storms.

Residents planning outdoor activities later this week should monitor the forecast for changing thunderstorm timing, particularly Friday night when stronger storms may develop. Lightning, gusty winds and brief heavy rainfall will be the primary hazards. More watches or advisories could be issued if the storm threat increases.
