Jackson, Mississippi – Dangerous heat will grip much of Mississippi again today, with heat index values climbing as high as 115 degrees in parts of central and southwest Mississippi, increasing the risk of heat-related illness during the hottest hours of the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Significant (Level 3) HeatRisk is in place across much of central and southwest Mississippi, including Jackson, Vicksburg, Natchez, Brookhaven and surrounding communities. Afternoon temperatures will reach the mid to upper 90s, while humidity pushes heat index values into the 110 to 115 degree range. Under these conditions, heat stroke becomes increasingly likely for anyone spending prolonged periods outdoors without adequate cooling or hydration.
Elsewhere, including Meridian, Philadelphia, Columbus, Greenwood, Greenville, Laurel and Hattiesburg, an Elevated (Level 2) HeatRisk remains in effect. These areas can expect highs in the mid to upper 90s with heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees, creating conditions favorable for heat exhaustion during extended outdoor activity.
Relief will be gradual. Thursday and Friday are expected to feature slightly less oppressive heat, although much of central Mississippi will still experience Elevated (Level 2) HeatRisk, with heat indices generally remaining between 105 and 110 degrees. Portions of eastern Mississippi may see Limited (Level 1) HeatRisk, where heat indices near 105 degrees can still lead to fatigue or heat exhaustion with prolonged exposure.
Residents should drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, wear lightweight clothing and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Check on elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Additional heat advisories may be issued if dangerous conditions persist into the weekend.
