Duluth, Minn. – Roads in northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin could turn slick Monday morning as rain transitions to a wintry mix and heavy, wet snow across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, rain will enter from the southeast Sunday afternoon, mixing with snow overnight and becoming the dominant precipitation by early Monday. The heaviest snow potential—1 inch or more—is expected in Iron and Ashland counties, with Hurley seeing an 83% chance of accumulation and Grand Marais at 45%.

Communities including Duluth, Two Harbors, and Silver Bay could experience slushy conditions during the Monday morning commute, while higher elevations near Grand Portage and Ely may see reduced visibility and patchy ice. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and avoid untreated roads.

The snow will be heavy and wet, increasing the risk of downed branches and power lines in elevated or tree-heavy areas. Residents should secure outdoor items and have flashlights and batteries ready.

The wintry mix is expected to taper off by Monday evening, but additional advisories could be issued if snow rates increase. For the latest conditions and road updates, check 511mn.org or local DOT channels.
