La Crosse, Wis. – Roads and low-lying areas across western and central Wisconsin could flood through Monday morning as a widespread rain system brings up to 2 inches of rainfall, especially near La Crosse and Madison.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, rain is spreading northward this afternoon and will persist overnight, with widespread totals of 1 inch expected. Some isolated areas have a 10% chance of seeing more than 2 inches. The heaviest rainfall is likely to impact southwestern Wisconsin, including counties like Vernon, Monroe, and Richland, where rivers and streams could rise quickly.
Minor flooding is possible, particularly where water accumulates on roadways or in poor-drainage areas. The NWS advises drivers to watch for standing water and avoid low-lying crossings. If the higher rainfall totals materialize, there is a 5% to 15% chance that a few rivers may exceed their banks. Residents near the Kickapoo and Wisconsin Rivers should remain alert.
Those living in flood-prone areas are urged to prepare now: clear storm drains, secure outdoor items, and monitor local alerts. Rain is expected to exit the region by late Monday morning, but additional advisories may follow if river levels continue to rise.
