GAYLORD, Mich. – Travelers in northern Michigan face a stormy stretch tonight as showers and thunderstorms move across Otsego County and beyond. The National Weather Service warns of heavy rain and possible lightning from late Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, with drivers on U.S. 131 urged to slow down and prepare for reduced visibility.

According to the Gaylord office of the National Weather Service, rain chances peak overnight with an 80 percent likelihood of thunderstorms before dawn Thursday. Rainfall totals could exceed half an inch in some locations, creating slick roads and ponding in low-lying areas. Winds will remain light but storms may briefly produce gusts near 20 mph.

By Thursday afternoon, rain showers continue before tapering off into the evening. Cooler air then settles in, with highs near 57 and overnight lows in the mid-40s. Patchy frost is possible Thursday and Friday nights, especially in rural and low-lying areas. Residents should cover sensitive plants and prepare gardens for an early chill.

Looking ahead to Labor Day weekend, skies clear and temperatures rebound into the upper 60s Saturday and low 70s by Sunday and Monday. Conditions look favorable for outdoor travel and holiday gatherings once the midweek storms pass.

Motorists should remain cautious tonight into Thursday, especially on U.S. 131, and check weather updates before traveling. Spotters are not expected to be activated, but rainfall reports are appreciated.
