Gaylord, Michigan – Northern Michigan residents should take advantage of relatively quiet weather through Tuesday because the region’s most persistent stretch of rain this week is expected to arrive Wednesday evening and continue into Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon hours Monday and Tuesday, but neither day is expected to be a washout. Forecasters say there will be plenty of dry time between rounds of precipitation across much of the region.

The greater concern comes Wednesday afternoon and evening as a more organized area of rain and thunderstorms moves into northern Lower Michigan and eastern Upper Michigan. Communities including Gaylord, Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, Cadillac and Mackinaw City could see periods of steady rainfall lasting into the Thursday morning commute.

Temperatures will remain seasonably cool through the period, with highs generally ranging from the upper 60s to upper 70s. Increased cloud cover and rainfall Wednesday may keep some locations cooler than forecast if precipitation develops earlier in the day.

Motorists traveling along I-75, U.S. 131 and U.S. 31 Wednesday night should prepare for wet roads and reduced visibility during heavier downpours. While severe weather is not currently highlighted as the primary threat, isolated thunderstorms could produce brief heavy rain and lightning.

Residents with outdoor plans later Wednesday should closely monitor forecast updates and have alternate indoor options available. The unsettled pattern is expected to gradually improve after Thursday morning, though additional rain chances may linger across parts of the Great Lakes region.
