Phoenix, Arizona – Residents across the Greater Phoenix area should remain weather aware this afternoon and evening as isolated thunderstorms develop across south-central Arizona, bringing the potential for strong winds, blowing dust and brief heavy rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, thunderstorm chances of 10% to 20% will expand into the lower deserts later today as storms forming over Arizona’s higher terrain move south and west. While coverage is expected to remain scattered, a few storms could become strong to severe.
The greatest concern will be powerful outflow winds capable of producing areas of blowing dust that could rapidly reduce visibility along Interstate 10, Loop 202, State Route 51 and portions of Interstate 17. Brief heavy downpours and frequent lightning are also possible where storms develop.
Rain chances are highest across the higher terrain north and east of Phoenix, including areas near Payson and the Mogollon Rim, where storm probabilities exceed 50% in some locations. Lower chances extend into communities including Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale and Queen Creek through the late afternoon and evening hours.
Forecasters note that even storms producing little rainfall can generate strong wind gusts and localized dust storms, creating dangerous driving conditions with little warning. Motorists should be prepared to pull off the roadway if visibility suddenly drops.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts, secure loose outdoor objects and have multiple ways to receive warnings through tonight. Additional thunderstorm activity remains possible as Arizona moves deeper into its early summer storm pattern.
