Gaylord, MI – Lake effect snow will bring up to five inches of accumulation to northern Michigan starting Wednesday and continuing into the weekend, potentially disrupting New Year’s travel plans.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, snow showers are expected to intensify Wednesday evening, particularly near Whitefish Bay and parts of the eastern Upper Peninsula. Heavier bands of snow could reduce visibility and create snow-covered roads, increasing the risk of accidents during commutes on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Drivers are advised to use extreme caution, especially on major roadways such as US-131 and M-32, where slick conditions are likely. Visibility could drop significantly in areas affected by heavy snow bands, making travel hazardous. Those planning to drive should prepare emergency kits and monitor weather updates for changing conditions.
Temperatures will hover near 30°F on New Year’s Day, falling into the teens overnight as winds increase to 10-15 mph. By Thursday, scattered snow showers will linger, with additional accumulation possible. The forecast predicts colder air moving into the region later in the week, with lows dropping to 12°F by Friday night.
Residents are encouraged to clear driveways and walkways promptly after snowfall to avoid icy buildup and to check on neighbors, particularly elderly individuals. Emergency services recommend staying off the roads during peak snowfall times unless absolutely necessary.
