Gaylord, MI – A surge of Arctic air is sweeping across northern Michigan, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and steady lake-effect snow into next week. Beginning Sunday, highs are expected to plunge into the single digits, with wind chills as low as -20°F to -25°F, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents should prepare for prolonged snow accumulation and dangerously cold conditions that could impact travel and daily activities. Lake-effect snow is forecast to intensify Sunday and continue through Tuesday, with roads such as US-131 potentially seeing hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, Gaylord will see highs of just 4°F Sunday, with lows near -3°F Sunday night. By Monday, daytime temperatures will struggle to reach 3°F, while overnight lows could fall to -8°F. Snowfall totals will likely accumulate steadily, with some areas receiving an inch or more each day.

Travelers are urged to take precautions, including carrying an emergency kit, avoiding non-essential travel, and allowing extra time to navigate slick roads. Prolonged exposure to the bitter cold can lead to frostbite within minutes. Residents should dress in layers, limit outdoor activity, and check on neighbors and pets.

Looking ahead, the extended forecast indicates highs of just 8°F Tuesday, with slight relief beginning Thursday when temperatures rise to the low 20s. Snow showers remain possible throughout the week.
